Alberta is the place for students to pursue their goals
and realize their dreams. Yes, the province is rich in
natural resources, but increasingly, education is becoming
Alberta's new and renewable commodity. Every
post-secondary institution plays a role in the success
of the province by offering a wide variety of programming
in a number of areas. Alberta's universities have
created endless opportunities and prospective students
are encouraged to take advantage of what they have to
offer. Universities in Alberta offer unique programs and
experiences that will inspire students on their educational
and life journey.
The University of Lethbridge
The University of Lethbridge (U of L) provides a
personal, supportive learning environment for approximately
8,000 students. The U of L offers relevant, progressive
programs and more than 150 degree/program
options through six faculties and schools - arts and science,
education, fine arts, health sciences, management
and graduate studies. While continuing to maintain its
tradition in undergraduate liberal education, the U of
L is emerging as a leading comprehensive and research
institution, and is expanding its graduate programming.
Undergraduate and graduate students alike learn with
inspired scholars who combine teaching, creativity and
research. The City of Lethbridge, located in southern
Alberta, is a vibrant community ideal for students.
The Alberta System
Alberta's post-secondary system is woven
together by a Campus Alberta approach. Campus
Alberta is not a single organization, nor is it a
building. It is an approach that involves post-secondary
institutions working together to meet the
needs of students, taxpayers and society.
Cooperation and collaboration are the keystones
of Campus Alberta, and allow for an
interconnected learning system to provide accessible
and high-quality post-secondary education.
Through consultation with stakeholders, including
post-secondary institutions and student leaders,
each of Alberta's publicly funded institutions
now has clearly defined roles and responsibilities
under categories based on programs offered, type
of research conducted, and the area served.
Studying in Alberta has many benefits, including
the strong transfer system. Students are able
to transfer from one institution to another thanks
to agreements among several institutions. This
allows students to begin their programs at one
institution and complete their program elsewhere
in the province.
Employment Oportunities
Students will find many summer and parttime
jobs available, especially in urban areas. Jobs
in the disciplines students pursue are usually
readily available, providing strong internship and
co-op university programs. The vibrant provincial
economy also provides choices for university
graduates who are ready to move into professional
careers.
The ratio of post-secondary graduates working
in their field of study within two years of graduation
remains high at 98 per cent for university
graduates. In 2007, the average hourly earnings
for a person with a university degree in Alberta
was $29 compared to $19 per hour for someone
with a high school diploma.
