The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI)
offers an education rich in knowledge and opportunities
- and in value. With a legacy of more than 200
years of history, as well as small size and mixed rural/
urban environment, UPEI has a distinctive character
that combines tradition with leading-edge research and
learning opportunities.
As an institution committed to creating accessible
and inclusive environments for learning, teaching, and
living, UPEI is proud that students and graduates alike
applaud the university's intimate atmosphere where
people feel like they belong. Consistently ranked one
of Canada's top ten primarily undergraduate universities,
UPEI has grown to become an integral part of the
city and the province as it undergoes unprecedented
development, transforming the campus and bolstering
its national and international reputation.
UPEI is located in PEI's capital, Charlottetown, a
friendly and culturally vibrant city of 32,000 and one
of the safest cities in Canada. Campus architecture is
an inviting mix of old and new buildings, all within
easy walking distance. A world-class biosciences and
health research facility is home to scientists from UPEI,
National Research Council, and Agriculture & Agri-
Foods Canada. The new School of Business and a major
expansion of the Atlantic Veterinary College opened
in 2008. Three new or newly refurbished smoke-free
residences house 434 students, with flexible all-youcare-
to-eat meal plans.
Engaged in Student sucess
Home to four 3M Teaching Award-winners, UPEI
boasts small class sizes, particularly in upper-level classes,
as part of its commitment to teaching excellence.
Just over 4,200 students attended UPEI in 2008 - the
highest-ever enrolment for full- and part-time students.
Many cite professors knowing them by name, not by
number, as one of UPEI's great strengths.
Teaching methods range from extensive face-to-face
interaction to the use of web-based teaching through
Moodle and video podcasting. Students appreciate
the many and varied opportunities to work alongside
professors doing meaningful research. Third-year students
have an opportunity for a year-long exchange
with Ryerson University through the new and innovative
EDGE (Experiences Diversity Growth Exchange)
program. All first-year students must now take
a new course: Global Issues: Critical Thinking
and Writing, an interdisciplinary approach to
contemporary communication skills through the
lens of current global issues.
Scholarships and awards
More than $2.5 million in scholarships, bursaries,
and awards assist students who achieve
well academically or who are in financial need.
Inspiring Excellence Awards provide an automatic
entrance scholarship of $600 in first year,
renewable in second, to students who complete
high school with an 85 per cent average. Entrance
scholarships range from $1,000 non-renewable
to $5,000 renewable.
What it costs
UPEI tuition fees are the lowest in the
Maritimes, and among the lowest in the country.
